17 yıl önce işlenen cinayetlerin ardından yakalanamayan bir seri katilin davasını günümüzde, Louisiana Eyaleti Polisi Kriminal Soruşturma Bölümünden iki polis dedektifi tekrar açarlar. Dizinin ilk sezonu 8 bölümden oluşacak ve eğer dizi devam kararı alırsa her sezon farklı konular ve karakterleri işlemeye devam edecek.
True Detective'in ilk sezonu eleştirmenlerden çok olumlu eleştiriler aldı. David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle gazetesinde "Diyaloğu zengin, renkli ve kışkırtıcı" diye yazdı.
